“What types of therapy do you use?”: A backstage tour

My method is eclectic. Imagine this- I’ve a makeup box of brushes, potions and powders, or a toolbox of powertools, screwdrivers and hammers. I select the best ones for you. Here’s the types of therapy I use, in plain English:–

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

  • Self-awareness: Learn how your perceptions affect your feelings, actions and body. And how they all form a vicious or virtuous cycle.
  • Deal with conflicting thoughts and feelings: We tease out the different things your emotional and logical sides want. So they end their war and befriend each other.
  • Know yourself deeply: Did you know your belief system (blueprints/limiting beliefs) directs the way you see the world? We’ll uncover that for lasting success.
  • Used in: Assessment, formulation and treatment.

Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT)

  • What? Marries CBT and Eastern mindfulness
  • Becoming present: Stop being lost in the infinite mindscape of the past (depression) and present (anxiety).
  • Self-awareness: Knowing the nature of your mind and thoughts
  • Calm: Sitting in the eye of the tornado of the mind, and learning to calm the storm.
  • Used in: Goal-setting, treatment

 Compassion-focused Therapy (CFT)

  • Self-awareness: Learn about what makes you motivated, threatened and soothed. And how these three systems have affected human beings.
  • Stop bullying yourself: The inner child and adult respect- not suppress- each other.
  • Working with self-criticism, shame and perfectionism: We bully ourselves. We  expect perfection, and can’t tolerate signs of being human (like feeling emotions). So, we learn to love ourselves and be kind.
  • Used in: Assessment, formulation, treatment, goal-setting

 Narrative Therapy (NT)

  • What? We are Homo fabula. We tell stories, remember stories, and forget facts.
  • Self-awareness: Unearth the stories you tell about yourself and the world.
  • Get unstuck: Disprove the stories that hold you back.
  • Go forward: Weave new stories that will propel you forward.
  • Used in: Assessment, formulation, treatment

Motivational Interviewing (MI)

  • What? We up your motivation to change your behaviours.
  • Harness your resistance like an arrow: Dig deep into it, use it to fuel progress. Because an arrow can only be shot by pulling it backwards.
  • Used in: Assessment, treatment, formulation

Solution-focused Therapy (SFT)

  • Visualise your future? Tap into the life you really desire, on your terms.
  • Use your strengths and resources creatively: Solve your problems, achieve your goals.
  • Used in: Goal-setting, treatment

Psychodynamic Therapy

  • What? Shines a flashlight on the processes running your belief system.
  • Self-awareness: Insight into how your unconsciousness affects your behaviour
  • Clarity: Learn how your past relationships influence your present
  • Used in: Assessment, formulation, treatment

This piece is about the types of therapy I use, and how I see them. It is part of a series “What is Psychotherapy?” written and curated for you. Too many people have asked the same questions, and told me how not knowing stopped them from seeking professional help. I hope this helps you. And, do you have a question about what is psychotherapy or any of these types of therapy? Leave a comment or Pop me a mail. I read every email.
